How to help a 6–7 year old with mazes

Mazes are the classic first puzzle. A child traces one path from the start to the star, learning to look ahead and to back out of dead ends calmly. At this age they mainly build planning ahead, pencil control and patience.

Ask your child to find the path with their eyes before drawing. Timing a maze with a sand timer makes it a game; beating their own time matters more than speed.

Ten minutes a day is plenty. Stop while it is still fun, and praise the effort (“you kept going after that dead end”) more than the speed.

Questions parents ask

At what age can a child do a maze?

Most children can follow a simple maze with a finger by age 3 or 4. Our Level 1 mazes are small 6 × 6 grids made for that stage.

Do mazes help with handwriting?

Tracing a path inside narrow lines builds the same pencil control that writing needs, so mazes are a gentle warm-up before writing practice.

Do the mazes have answers?

Yes. Every maze has an answer key with the one correct path drawn in, and each maze is checked to have exactly one solution.
